Flutterwave, Africa's largest payments startup, has launched a physical naira card targeting Nigerians returning from abroad during the festive season, as the fintech company expands its cross-border payment offerings.
The Send App Travel Card, developed in partnership with expense management firm Odysy and domestic card scheme AfriGO, aims to address payment challenges faced by diaspora Nigerians who spent approximately ₦60 billion during December homecoming visits in 2024, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
The card enables users to access domestic point-of-sale terminals, ATMs, and contactless payment options within Nigeria. Customers can fund the card using US, EU, or UK payment cards through Flutterwave's Send App platform and pre-order cards for delivery before arrival.
Addressing diaspora payment friction
"For years, we've helped Nigerians abroad support life at home through fast, reliable remittances," says Harvey Bahia, Head of Send App Business at Flutterwave. "Now, for the first time, we're giving them a physical way to spend with the same ease and control when they return."
The initiative addresses persistent challenges faced by returning Nigerians, including cash limitations, volatile exchange rates, and foreign card failures. The company promises 24-hour card delivery nationwide, with same-day service in Lagos and Abuja for orders placed before 4 PM.
Users can manage their cards through the Send App, including locking, freezing, or requesting replacements, without requiring ATM activation. The launch follows Flutterwave's recent multi-year partnership with blockchain software company Polygon Labs for cross-continental settlement solutions.
