ACI Worldwide, a global provider of real-time payments software, and UBX Tanzania, a subsidiary of the pan-African fintech platform UBX, have expanded their strategic partnership to enhance the resilience and capacity of Tanzania's payments ecosystem. Announced on May 21, 2026, the move will see the integration of ACI's Enterprise Payments Platform into UBX Tanzania's existing infrastructure, which already processes transactions for several banks and financial institutions in the country.
The expansion is designed to increase transaction processing capacity and improve system reliability, addressing the growing demand for digital financial services in Tanzania. UBX Tanzania, which operates under the brand name 'Tembo', provides a shared technology platform that enables banks and other financial service providers to offer digital products without building the underlying infrastructure themselves. This model is intended to accelerate financial inclusion by lowering the barrier to entry for smaller institutions.
"Our expanded partnership with ACI Worldwide is a significant step towards building a more robust and scalable payments infrastructure for Tanzania," said a spokesperson for UBX Tanzania. The company noted that the enhanced platform will support a wider range of payment types and channels, aiming to provide a more seamless experience for end-users across the country.
The partnership reflects a broader trend across East Africa, where financial institutions and technology providers are investing in core system upgrades to handle rising digital transaction volumes. Tanzania has one of the most active mobile money markets in Africa, dominated by services like M-Pesa and Tigo Pesa, creating a competitive environment where banks and fintechs seek to offer interoperable and reliable digital payment options.
For ACI Worldwide, the deal represents a deepening of its footprint in a key African market. The company's software is used by thousands of financial institutions globally to process real-time, digital, and batch payments. Its collaboration with UBX Tanzania aligns with a regional strategy of partnering with local platforms that have established networks and regulatory understanding, rather than pursuing a direct market entry.
The initiative comes as regulatory bodies in Africa, including the Bank of Tanzania, continue to emphasize the importance of secure, efficient, and inclusive payment systems. Enhancing the technical backbone of financial services is seen as critical for supporting economic growth and enabling the digital transactions envisioned under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
