Nigerian digital payments and commerce company Interswitch has entered a strategic partnership with Swiss banking software firm Temenos to accelerate the provision of digital banking services across Africa, the companies announced this week. The collaboration will see Interswitch integrate Temenos' core banking platform into its own offerings, enabling it to provide a wider suite of digital banking solutions to financial institutions on the continent.
The partnership aims to address the growing demand for modern, scalable banking infrastructure from both traditional banks and emerging fintechs. By leveraging Temenos' cloud-native platform, Interswitch intends to help its clients launch new products more quickly and improve operational efficiency. This move is seen as a significant step in Interswitch's strategy to deepen its role beyond payments processing and into the core banking technology stack.
Interswitch, founded in 2002, operates one of Nigeria's major domestic card schemes, Verve, and processes a substantial portion of the country's electronic transactions. Its partnership with a global player like Temenos reflects the increasing sophistication of Africa's financial technology landscape, where local leaders are seeking alliances to enhance their technical capabilities and expand their reach.
The announcement comes amid a period of heightened activity in Africa's digital finance sector, where partnerships are increasingly common as firms seek to offer more comprehensive services. In a separate development, cross-border payments platform Flutterwave recently partnered with MoneyGram's blockchain network, Tempo, to facilitate stablecoin settlements, aiming to reduce the cost and time of international transfers for African businesses and individuals.
Similarly, other firms are focusing on improving settlement speeds within the continent. Esca Finance, a digital settlement platform, has partnered with the African Export-Import Bank's MANSA platform to enable same-day settlements for intra-African trade, addressing a long-standing challenge of delayed payments in cross-border commerce.
These concurrent initiatives highlight a broader trend of infrastructure-building and collaboration aimed at solving persistent friction points in African finance, from domestic digital banking to regional and international payments. The Interswitch-Temenos deal specifically targets the foundational technology that banks need to compete in a digital-first environment, where customer expectations for seamless, always-available services are rising.
While the financial terms of the Interswitch and Temenos partnership were not disclosed, the alliance is expected to enhance Interswitch's product portfolio significantly. It allows the Nigerian firm to offer a packaged solution combining its deep regional expertise and distribution network with Temenos' internationally recognized banking software, potentially making it a more formidable competitor against other global core banking providers operating in Africa.
