RSwitch, Rwanda's national payment switch operator, will phase out its eKash digital wallet service, the company announced on July 13, 2026. The decision marks a strategic shift for the firm, which will now focus on its core infrastructure role as the operator of Rwanda's interoperable national payment system, also called eKash. The consumer-facing wallet will be discontinued, with users advised to transition to other digital financial services.
The eKash wallet was launched in 2021 as a government-backed initiative to promote cashless transactions and financial inclusion. RSwitch stated that the Rwandan digital payments ecosystem has matured significantly since the wallet's introduction, with a proliferation of mobile money and banking applications. "The market has evolved," a company representative noted, indicating that the original need for a state-sponsored consumer wallet has diminished as commercial providers have expanded their services.
This move coincides with the recent achievement of full interoperability on the eKash national payment system, which RSwitch also operates. That system, distinct from the wallet service, connects banks, microfinance institutions, mobile money operators, and payment service providers across Rwanda. It allows users of different financial platforms to send and receive money seamlessly, regardless of their service provider. The interoperability platform went live on July -13, 2026, following a pilot phase.
The development of the eKash interoperable system is part of a broader regional trend in Africa towards creating integrated digital payment landscapes. Similar initiatives exist or are underway in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, aiming to reduce fragmentation and lower the cost of digital transactions. In Rwanda, the system is designed to support the government's National Payment System Strategy and its goals for a cashless economy.
RSwitch emphasized that the phasing out of the wallet service does not affect the underlying national payment infrastructure. "The eKash switch remains the backbone for interoperable transactions in Rwanda," the company stated. Users with balances in their eKash wallets are being guided through a process to transfer funds to other accounts. The company has not disclosed a specific end date for the wallet service but has begun customer communications to ensure an orderly transition.
Analysts observe that the decision reflects a natural progression in a maturing fintech market, where specialized infrastructure providers often step back from direct consumer competition to enable a wider ecosystem. The move may allow RSwitch to concentrate on maintaining and upgrading the technical rails that power Rwanda's digital economy, a role seen as critical for sustained growth in financial inclusion. The company's pivot comes as other players in Rwanda continue to innovate on the consumer front, such as the recent launch of services like 'RidewithMomo' aimed at promoting cashless payments in specific sectors like transportation.
